Writers' Resources

There are a lot of sites out there that put together information that is meant to be useful to writers. However, many of them are started with the best of intentions, then left to rot in cyberspace. In other cases, you have to pay to obtain any useful information. These sites are well-tended, free and updated frequently.

Cyber Community

Friendship, resources, advice...

Poets & Writers
The online version of the print magazine, Poets & Writers' web site contains articles from its newsstand incarnation, job and contest classified listings, and several other useful resources. The best part of the site is the Speakeasy, which is filled with forums where you can post stories and get critiques from writers around the world, find writing excercises or join general discussions about the woes and joys of writing. Use common sense with the Speakeasy: Be sure and offer your own expertise and insight because what you put into it will directly effect what you get out of it.

Writing for the web

Contentious
A web-zine devoted to the discussion of online writing, Contentious features articles that review sites for their content, not just their image. It is also home base for an e-mail discussion list (lserv) that is designed to be a forum and idea-sharing space for writers and editors who work, or want to work in this medium.

The real stuff

Essential for journalists

American Journalism Review - Newslink and Investigative Reporters and Editors
Industry information and trends, worthwhile classifieds, links galore. Both of these sites contain indispensible information that will keep you abreast of current ethical dilemmas in journalism, new publications that have cropped up lately, and much more.

Editor & Publisher Magazine Online
Here, you'll find news about the entire publishing industry. There are how-tos, book reviews, an online store for reference materials and a database that contains the web site info for publishers around the world.

Writer's Market
A web extension of the annual Writer's Market, this site contains updated, searchable writer's guidelines for huge, honking, glossy mags as well as itty-bitty e-zines. It also has articles about writing queries, selling manuscripts and composing saleable stories that are sometimes helpful, but the market listings are the most useful component of this site.
