My mother (an art educator) likes to tell people a story about taking me into Manhattan when Picasso's Guernica was visiting the Museum of Modern Art. All I could do in response to the sight was sit down on the floor in the middle of the room and try to absorb of all of its details. I try to do the same thing when I write about art (although usually without sitting on the floor).
